Independent Car Rental Price Comparisons for Italy.

Economy & Compact Size Car Hire Prices Compared.

Easily Find the Best Car Hire Deals with our Price Tables.

Beware 'cheap car rental' offers, fly-by-night internet brokers & unknown car rental companies.

Of course you are looking for the best and lowest price for a car rental in Italy. But if you just take the cheapest price, you may well regret it as the car hire industry has some bad actors and bad practices.

One danger: low ball quotes are used to hook you, but later you may find expensive add-ons, intense 'upselling' of insurance, high mileage cars, and off-airport facilities.  Another danger - car classes can be deceptive - be sure you're comparing similar models. For example, the Fiat Panda is separate below because it is smaller than the other Economy models - especially for baggage. More danger: don't decide from the initial quote - look at the final total including tax and deceptive 'franchise' and refueling fees. Hertz quoted $141. for a Panda on the first web page, but the total to pay at the reservation page was $381.00 !

In the 1980's, we hired our first rental in Italy:  a VW Beetle with no seat belts and a full ashtray. Since then we've learned a lot that can help you. We've rented cars in Italy over 50 times since that first dog - from every major car rental company and all over the country. We also monitor Italian news, related Italian & English blogs, and several Italian traveler forums.

Independent Car Hire Price Comparisons
Read the three tables below with price comparisons and you'll quickly see why you need this research - the price spreads are BIG. The prices are shown for: Compact Size, Economy Size, and Economy Fiat Panda.  We list the assumptions used below the price comparisons.  In particular, we have not reported some companies' lower prices because - in our opinion - they have way too many complaints. Also, your travel circumstances might have different needs - an additional driver, a child seat, or a different pick-up city could change the price balance.
Lastly, if it's right for you, please use our links when you book. Your reservation helps support our site and our traveler information articles. The links do not affect the prices offered.

ASSUMPTIONS
Fiat Panda (Economy) with small baggage area. Pontremoli, Tuscany.
Fiat Panda (Economy). Note small baggage area. Pontremoli, Tuscany.
Companies. We only sampled the companies we consider fairly reputable and we only listed the lower prices in each category. You really do not want to choose on price alone! Excluded from the pricing were companies in the lowest two rating categories in our article Independent Car Rental Reviews for Italy : Firefly, Gold Car (a/k/a Rhodium), Locauto, Sicily by Car (a/k/a AutoEuropa, Thrifty, Dollar), Green Motion, Interent.

Cars.  Be alert - rental companies are not consistent with the category names, and some rental car models seem stripped down from the consumer models. We separated out the Fiat Panda because it lists as an Economy at most companies, as a Mini at some (it's a Mini, in our opinion, due to the limited baggage space). We suggest trying Wikipedia to compare unknown car models with ones you are familiar with.

Insurance. By law, Italian car rentals include a collision damage waiver (CDW) except for an excess (deductible) that is the renter's responsibility, typically 1000€ for damage, 1800€ for theft. How you handle this can be a big variable in cost comparisons. Many renters don't worry about the excess as they are a.) covered by their home auto insurance b.) covered by their credit card  c.) covered by a special policy or d.) rich, confident, or over-confident. Many others prefer a zero excess through insurance coverage a.) from third party travel insurers or b.) from a car rental broker such as AutoEurope or c.) from the car rental company. All these solutions have pros and cons which involve cost, claim procedures, and - importantly - coverage exclusions.

Currency. We show three currencies. The quoted currency is in bold and we converted the others at the then current bank rate shown in the table.

Specials. We ignored special offers as they are transitory, but they can be significant. An additional driver free is often worth over $60.00 for a week long rental.

Prices. We included all taxes and fees to the extent possible. Price differences of up to 4% or so should be ignored due to currency flux. The prices shown existed once, we assure you, but car rental rates change MORE OFTEN THAN AIR FARES! They use demand models with historic data to figure out what you are going to do before you know it yourself. Mostly they change within +/- 10%, but the sky is the limit if your arrival city is holding a building trades convention!

Fuel. If there was a choice, we only used the 'Full to Full' option, that is receive it full, return it full. By the way, get and keep a receipt for your last fuel fill, and take a photo of the dashboard with the mileage and gas gauge showing.

Car Rental Tip_____________________________________________________________
Renting A Car in Italy. If you drive in urban areas at home, you can drive in Italy. Stick to well known rental companies. Rental prices are tricky - low prices can lead to add-ons . We have two articles to help:
We also recommend the reputable car hire brokers AutoEurope  and its subsidiary, Kemwel Discount. They allow you to compare companies in one search, get zero deductible insurance if needed, cancel easily, and have 24/7 English customer service.  If you will be renting a car, please consider our links below (which do not affect the prices offered).
