Monterosso  The largest little town with a resort feel & the most restaurants and hotels. The only real beach in CT, some parking & the best train connections. There's an old town and a new section and it's fairly level. The full town name is Monterosso al Mare.  Booking.com Monterosso

Vernazza                      CC by Byscuit

Vernazza  The prettiest, most celebrated town with the most visitors. You really should see it. Photographers love this town especially at sunset as the nearby hills provide stunning views.   Booking.com Vernazza

Corniglia Sitting prettily on a promontory high above the sea with an historic church. It's the least crowded. It's a climb from the train and the boat doesn't stop here, but it's still very romantic and the views are the best.
Booking.com Corniglia
Manarola The second most popular to explore, it's very photogenic & colorful. Approached from the sea, the town seems balanced on a cliff. Below there's a tiny harbor with quaint fishing boats and the famous terraces loom nearby. Booking.com Manarola

Riomaggiore         CC by Nick Grosoli
Riomaggiore Closest to La Spezia & Portovenere, it's very characteristic. Colorful stacked homes line the opening in the cliff and there's another wee harbor. Kayak rentals and small boat tours available here.     Booking.com Riomaggiore

Why Archived Schedules?  The schedules for the boats based around the Gulf of La Spezia are only available when the boats are running. So we've created archives of the recent schedules including the price (in pdf format).  The schedules are very similar from year to year, so you can use them to figure out your next vacation, but be sure to verify before you travel if your schedule is time sensitive.

Is There Service to Portofino?
There is No Fall or Spring Service to Portofino from the Gulf of La Spezia and Cinque Terre ports. In the summer there is service two days per week from early July to early September.

There is excellent Portofino service in the fall from ports further north in the Gulf of Tigullio, such as Rapallo. Look at this article: Portofino Ferry Boat Schedules from Rapallo & SML.

The Cinque Terre Boat / Ferry Schedules

The vineyard terraces of Cinque Terre in early spring.                      circa 1987
Also written Cinqueterre, these are five small villages on the dramatic Ligurian coast. The villages are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso.  All have train service, and all except Corniglia have ferry service.  The area is known for it's wonderful hiking trails, pretty scenery, and its popularity . Since the trails are often steep and sometimes rocky, using the boats appeals to many, and it's a beautiful way to see the area. Consider hiking in one direction, and taking the boat or the train to return. Do not drive to the villages!

FAQ Should I bring guidebooks? Definitely, it's hard to find guides in English in Italy. We use this one locally: Liguria: The Italian Riviera / Whitehouse. The most popular Italy Guides on Amazon are Rick Steves Italy 2016  &  Lonely Planet Italy(Click links for the Amazon page).  Should I bring a map? We think it's easier to arrive with one. For driving get 1:200,000 scale. We prefer the DeAgostini and Touring Club Italiano Touring Club Liguria Map (Amazon Link) series over Michelin. You can also buy one in Italy -larger bookstores and some autostrada rest stops have good selections. Should I opt for a GPS for a rental car? Many feel they are less useful in Italy. Consider bringing one from home with an Italy/Europe map loaded -both US & European cars are 12V.
